Nigeria Police Defend Actions in Rivers State Amid Governor’s Criticism

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to accusations from Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, regarding its involvement in the state’s local government elections, stressing that its actions are in line with a court order and that it remains neutral in the political process.

Governor Fubara had accused the police and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of interfering in the elections and aiding electoral malpractice. However, the NPF clarified that a Federal High Court had issued an order barring police from direct involvement in the election. The force emphasized that it has fully complied with this ruling.

The controversy escalated after police officers from the Rivers State Government House were reportedly deployed to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) office, prompting the Commissioner of Police to replace them with officers from the Command’s Operations Department. According to the NPF, this replacement was solely to secure the RIEC office overnight and prevent any attacks.

In a statement, the NPF expressed shock at Governor Fubara’s reaction, during which he made several accusations and criticized the Inspector-General of Police. The police condemned the governor’s comments, particularly his threats of violence over the local elections.

The NPF reassured the public that it is committed to maintaining law and order, and has increased its presence across Rivers State to ensure safety. Citizens have been advised to carry on with their daily activities peacefully.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, with multiple court orders and security concerns surrounding the local government elections.
