In a recently shared video on social media, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, cautioned Nigerians against physical altercations, warning that the law presumes a person to be a murderer if the person they fought and injured dies within a year and a day.

Adejobi urged individuals to manage their anger and avoid physical confrontations, as even a simple slap can result in a person’s death and escalate into a murder case that is difficult to be absolved of.

He stressed that causing bodily harm to someone attracts a more severe punishment than assault or assault occasioning harm, and that when someone causes injury to another person, the law assumes they are responsible for any subsequent death that occurs within a year and a day, unless proven otherwise by experts, autopsy, or other evidence.

Adejobi emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, stating that individuals can express their anger without resorting to violence.
