Nigerian Muslims have been called upon by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to watch out for the moon that signals the start of Ramadan after sunset on Wednesday.
The NSCIA President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, urged Muslims across the country to look out for the moon and report any credible sighting to the National Moon-Sighting Committee (NMSC).
In a statement released by the council’s Director of Administration, Arc. Zubairu Haruna Usman-Ugwu, it was revealed that if the crescent is sighted on Wednesday, Ramadan will commence on Thursday, the 23rd of March, but if not, it will begin on Friday, the 24th of March.
The council also urged Muslims to pray for peace, unity and progress in Nigeria during the holy month and appealed to wealthy individuals to extend their acts of charity to the less privileged members of their communities.
