The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised a proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of political office holders, calling it “insensitive” at a time of worsening economic strain.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, told Vanguard on Wednesday in Abuja that the move highlighted a growing disconnect between Nigeria’s political elite and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.
He cited surging inflation, the collapse of the naira, and rising food prices as evidence that most Nigerians are under severe financial pressure. According to him, even the newly approved minimum wage of ₦70,000 falls short of meeting basic living costs.
“It is highly insensitive for such an issue to be raised in the midst of hunger, inflation, and the collapse of our naira,” Osadolor said.
He argued that instead of raising salaries for office holders, the government should be focused on cutting costs, reducing overheads, and promoting accountability.
The PDP youth leader urged policymakers to adopt measures that would ease the burden on citizens, warning that failing to do so risked deepening public frustration.
