Vehicular movement along the Ughelli axis of the East-West Road in Delta State was disrupted for hours as angry protesters from Edjekota community, Ogor, barricaded the highway, decrying alleged land grabbing by some community leaders.

The demonstrators, including elderly men, women, and youths, carried leaf branches and burned tyres, accusing powerful figures within Ogor Kingdom of selling ancestral land and ponds without the consent of rightful owners.

“We are protesting because the land we inherited from our forefathers is being taken over. We saw a bulldozer clearing the land, and we had to stop them,” said a protester, Sunday Monologue.

Community leaders deny involvement in any land sales. Edjekota’s chairman, Pastor Oghenemakpor Uyoh, insisted he had not sold any land and urged the government to intervene.

“This land is our only inheritance,” said 80-year-old Pa Isaac Erutere, calling on authorities to halt further encroachment.

The protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations until the Delta State and Federal Governments step in.
