Authorities in Rivers State have dismissed reports claiming the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebele, has resigned ahead of tomorrow’s local government elections. The commission labelled the rumours as “mischievously false” and assured the public that Enebele remains in office.

In a press release on Friday, RSIEC confirmed that non-sensitive election materials have been distributed to all 6,366 polling units across Rivers’ 23 local government areas. The updated voter registers have also been posted in preparation for the elections.

RSIEC further assured voters that all logistics, including sensitive materials, have been finalized, with political party cards released as required.

The electoral body also reiterated that the polling centres would open on time as scheduled, with materials and voters’ registers already dispatched to distribution points.

This election follows a Supreme Court order, a September ruling by the High Court of Rivers State, and the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, affirming RSIEC’s authority to conduct the elections.

For the avoidance of doubt, RSIEC stressed that the 2024 local government elections would proceed as planned on 5th October, with no possibility of postponement.
