Wayne Rooney has tipped Arsenal’s teenage midfielder Max Dowman for a “massive future” after the 15-year-old made a striking Premier League debut at the weekend.

Dowman came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 5–0 win over Leeds at the Emirates on Saturday, aged just 15 years and 234 days. He won a late penalty during his 26 minutes on the pitch, converted by Viktor Gyokeres.

Former England captain Rooney, who himself broke through at 16 with Everton in 2002, praised Dowman’s composure. Speaking on his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, he said:

“To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy. I know I played when I was young, but I think he’s like 150 days younger than I was, or more. For Max and his family and friends, I’m sure they’re all living in a dream and a fairytale… you can see his future is so bright.”

Rooney added that Dowman’s name “keeps coming back” in conversations within the game, underlining the buzz around the youngster.

Dowman’s team-mate Ethan Nwaneri still holds the record as the youngest Premier League player, after appearing against Brentford in 2022 at 15 years and 181 days.

Reflecting on the pressures of early stardom, Rooney said: “It’s surreal… one minute you’re in the youth team and the next you’re in the first-team dressing room with some of your heroes. Max Dowman looks like a very level-headed lad, and you hope he understands what’s coming his way very soon.”
