The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kaduna State has dismissed claims by former governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai that its political structures in the state have collapsed into a coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement signed by its state chairman, Adamu Idris, the SDP described El-Rufai’s assertion as “spurious and false,” insisting the party remains intact and committed to repositioning itself as a credible opposition force.
The party recalled El-Rufai’s brief stint in its ranks, characterising his time as disruptive and fraught with internal wrangling. It stressed that stability had since returned following his departure.
“Our structures are robust and alive across Kaduna State. We are committed to promoting the true interests of Nigerians and will not be distracted by El-Rufai’s attempts to sow division,” the statement read.
The SDP went further, launching a scathing attack on the former governor, describing him as “a non-democrat, self-serving desperado, unrepentant bigot and tyranny personified.”
Party leaders reassured members that the SDP would continue to advocate for democracy and good governance while rejecting efforts to undermine its unity and values.
El-Rufai, alongside some opposition figures, had announced at the weekend that the entire SDP structure in Kaduna had been absorbed into the ADC coalition during a strategic meeting he chaired. Coalition spokesperson Darius Kurah said the move was aimed at strengthening opposition unity in the state.
