The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).
Also confirmed were Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as Commissioners of the Commission.
The confirmation, which took place during Tuesday’s plenary, followed the presentation and consideration of the report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (LP–Anambra Central).
Presenting the report, Senator Umeh said the nominees were thoroughly screened on October 14, 2025, and that the committee received no petitions or criminal complaints against any of them.
“The nominees appeared before the committee for screening, and after careful consideration of their credentials and responses, the committee found them qualified and suitable for the positions,” Umeh said.
He noted that the committee reviewed relevant documents including curriculum vitae, Code of Conduct Bureau clearance, police reports, and Department of State Services (DSS) clearance certificates before the screening.
Each nominee also made a presentation and responded to questions from the committee members, he added.
Following the presentation, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the confirmation to a voice vote — and the “ayes” carried the day.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier forwarded the nominees’ names to the Senate in a letter dated July 31, 2025, which was read on the floor on October 7 by Akpabio.
