Security forces across Awka have been placed on high alert ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s visit on Thursday, with major thoroughfares sealed off and checkpoints established at strategic junctions to ensure a smooth and peaceful event.
In the early hours of Wednesday, officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and local vigilante outfits fanned out across the city. Roads leading to the Government House and Nnamdi Azikiwe University were cordoned off, while alternative routes were signposted to ease commuter traffic and minimise disruption.
“The safety of Mr. President and all invited guests is our top priority,” said SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer. “We are fully equipped and prepared to maintain law and order before, during, and after the visit.”
President Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate several high-profile projects, including the new Government House complex, which features the “Iconic Light of the Nation Tower,” and to officially open the Emeka Anyaoku Centre at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Other unveilings will include the Solution FunCity recreation complex, the Anambra Country Club, as well as residential lodges for the state governor and the presidency.
Local residents have greeted the installations—and the president’s first commissioning of infrastructure in Anambra—with a mixture of pride and hopeful anticipation. “Ikenna Construction has really outdone itself on these projects,” remarked Kennedy Ikenna, a roadside trader. “We’re proud that the president chose Awka for these major ceremonies.”
Civil servant Kate Esione echoed that sentiment but added a plea for broader regional investment: “We appreciate the new facilities, but we hope his Excellency will bring more attention to healthcare and job creation in the South-East.”
The president’s itinerary also features a closed-door meeting with state leaders and a town-hall session with university stakeholders, underscoring Tinubu’s economic and educational priorities. Aides say the visit is intended not only to showcase completed capital works but also to reinforce the federal government’s commitment to balanced development across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
Traffic flow has so far remained light, as civilian vehicles are rerouted to secondary streets. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys around scheduled road closures, with notices displayed on billboards and local radio stations relaying updates throughout the day.
This heightened security posture follows similar measures observed during presidential visits nationwide, reflecting heightened concerns over public safety in recent months. Nonetheless, the atmosphere in Awka remains cordial, with local entrepreneurs setting up markets and community groups laying on cultural displays to welcome the presidential entourage.
As Awka prepares to host the nation’s leader, state officials are hopeful that the completed projects will catalyse further investment and serve as a template for future federal-state collaboration. For now, the city stands poised to roll out the red carpet—under the watchful eyes of heavily deployed security forces—and to mark a milestone in Anambra’s infrastructural development.
