In a devastating event, a young gunman, aged 18, went on a shooting spree outside a church in New Mexico, resulting in the loss of three lives before law enforcement officers intervened and fatally shot the assailant.
The incident occurred on Monday in the residential area of Farmington, New Mexico, located approximately 290km (180 miles) northwest of Albuquerque.
The armed teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed, unleashed violence that left three individuals dead. Additionally, several others, including two police officers, sustained injuries during the rampage.
Farmington Deputy Police Chief Baric Crum addressed the media in a news briefing, revealing that a total of nine people, excluding the suspect, were affected by the shooting.
However, it remains unclear whether the aforementioned tally includes the three fatalities.
Upon receiving multiple reports of an ongoing shooting, law enforcement promptly responded to the scene, discovering a chaotic situation where the perpetrator was targeting individuals on a residential street, as described by Crum.
Authorities believe that the 18-year-old gunman acted alone, and the motive behind the tragic incident remains unknown.
Crum stated, “We are still trying to determine why he was in this neighborhood.”
Footage captured by a bystander and shared on the social media platform TikTok verified by Farmington police spokesperson Shanice Gonzales showcased the distressing episode.
The video depicts a black-clad individual pacing near the driveway of the First Church of Christ Scientist, seemingly armed with a handgun.
Subsequently, the assailant is seen being confronted and ultimately neutralized by the police in front of the church building.
The two wounded officers, one from the Farmington Police Department and the other from the New Mexico State Police, are reported to be in stable condition at the San Juan Regional Medical Center.
Farmington, a significant center for oil and gas drilling and a popular shopping destination for nearby Navajo Nation and smaller towns in the four-corners region where New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah converge, has experienced previous high-profile incidents of fatal gun violence.
Just last month, Farmington police fatally shot an armed homeowner at his residence and engaged in a gun battle with his wife, following a misdirected response to a domestic violence call.
Furthermore, the city was also the site of a tragic high school shooting in December 2017, where a gunman claimed the lives of two students before taking his own.
This shooting marks one of the 225 mass shootings documented in the United States this year, according to Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization.
Their definition of a mass shooting involves incidents where four or more individuals, excluding the perpetrator, are either injured or killed.
