Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, plunging generation from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The incident, which occurred at about 11:23 a.m., triggered widespread outages across the country. The Nigeria National Grid X handle, which provides updates on power distribution, confirmed the collapse and said “system restoration is in progress.”

In a follow-up post, the account added that all distribution companies (DisCos) across the country, except Ibadan DisCo, had seen their allocations fall to zero megawatts. “Disco load” refers to the amount of power allocated to each DisCo from the national grid.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), in a statement on its verified social media handle, also confirmed the incident.

“Dear Valued Customers, please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the company said.

It added that efforts were ongoing with stakeholders to stabilise the grid and restore supply.

The collapse is the latest in a series of system failures that have plagued Nigeria’s fragile power sector, leaving millions without electricity.
