The Police Command in Benue state has announced the arrest of a suspected kidnap kingpin and the death of a notorious armed robber in two separate operations in Zaki Biam and Taraku communities of Ukum and Gwer East Local Government Areas.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, the kidnap kingpin was apprehended a few days ago after information was received that he was allegedly threatening to abduct a Zaki Biam based businessman.

The suspect had reportedly demanded a ransom of N5 million and threatened to kidnap and kill the businessman if the payment was not made.

Although the victim paid N500,000 to the suspect’s account, the threat persisted.

Following a police investigation, the suspect, Elijah Elisha, was arrested and a police uniform and military camouflage trousers were recovered from his house.

The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime.

In a related development, a notorious armed robber was gunned down at Ankyoor village during an alleged robbery operation.

According to the statement, while men of Operation Zenda JTF were on routine patrol along Taraku-Otukpo road, they encountered the syndicate engaged in a gun duel.

One of the robbers was fatally shot and was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The other gang members reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries.

The Command’s PRO also disclosed that a locally made pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm live ammunition and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the suspect. Investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

The incidents have been widely reported and are being closely monitored by the authorities.
